30 Years

Wednesday, September 17, 2014

As it turns out, I am, in fact, alive!

Reasons for my absence boil down to a severe bout of depression following some unsavory life events, and getting back into the swing of art. And I'm sure if you ask almost any artist, stopping when motivated is scary because you never know when it will come back. In short, sorry for my absence, but I'm still not in the clear for a regular schedule just yet.

Today is my 30th birthday. Looking back at my 30 before 30 post, I definitely bit off more than I could chew with that list. I never really factored in my bouts of severe depression, which was silly of me seeing as how they happen multiple times a year, and this year was no different.

To bare all (or to bare what I am at least comfortable with making public knowledge), I went through a break-up with my boyfriend of two years, which somewhat set off the depression. Shortly after, my living situation worsened due to almost total and constant lack of privacy or any time alone. As someone who is very introverted, I require a great deal of time alone to function around other people. I wasn't (and still am not) getting that much needed refuge, so life is a constant game of "how much anxiety will I go through today?" I'm still saving to move, but my moving date keeps getting pushed back as new expenses arise and I honestly lose hope at least once a week.

That particular spell of depression lasted longer than most, and it was the most severe to hit me in a while. However, I've mostly pulled out of it and can focus on trying to better things for myself as best I can while in my current situation.

If you follow my art tumblr, you've no doubt noticed the barrage of fanart that has taken it over. To be honest I can't really make any excuses for the fanart. I used games as an escape from my problems and what it led to was more inspiration than I knew was possible. I'm still so relieved over feeling any desire to pick up my artwork again, whatever the content. The fact of the matter is, I've drawn more in the past 3 months than I had in the past 3 years! Unforgivable! What's also sad is how quickly I'm improving. If I had put this much work into the past three years, imagine how much more developed my art would be by now! It's a shame. I can only hope this inspiration leaks into my original work soon and I can start putting together my comics without getting discouraged!

To focus on more of the positive in my life, I began taking care of my body again. I wanted to turn 30 without more regrets than necessary, and getting back into shape was one of the things close to the top of my to-do list. My body was feeling more and more foreign to me as this year passed, and finally I had enough. As my depression cloud faded, I knew I had to do something to help with my physical well-being. I wanted to feel comfortable in my own skin again. I'm well on my way. I joined Pop Physique in late July and have been going at least 3 times a week ever since. There hasn't been much change to my physical appearance (if any) but I can definitely feel a difference inside myself. I FEEL and strong and capable and it is affecting my entire outlook. I feel more confident than I have in months and months and even when I'm not having the best of days, I can still feel some satisfaction that my body feels more familiar to me. I've still a long way to go before I'm at my best again, but little by little I'm getting there.

Turning 30 has always seemed like such a huge milestone and a big deal. It was like the next major level up of life! I've been worried for the last few years that I hadn't done enough, that I had nothing to show for myself despite being an official OFFICIAL really real adult now. How did I get here without earning all the required XP? Being here now is a lot less scary than it looked two years ago. Hell it even is a lot less scary than it looked 2 months ago. I still have goals and dreams, some may be possible and some may still be dreams forever. (Does the ultimate margarita truly exist, and where can I find it?) Maybe I won't accomplish anything until I'm 40, or maybe when I'm 50 everything will fall into place in my life. I think it's best to stop relying on magical numbers now. Whatever I do or do not accomplish have nothing to do with my age! I can only focus on doing what makes me happy and living my life the best I can.

I still plan on going through my 30 before 30 list and talking about what I pulled off and how and why. I also still have tons of Portland photos never shared. Photo-editing is such a task! I think if I share those, I might just jam my favorites into a big post (or two) and be done with it. I still have a few ideas floating around for this blog, though not exactly the ones I originally intended. My outfit posts are on indefinite hold for now. While part of the reason I stopped doing them was from depression and not feeling good about myself, the other reason was weight gain. I don't fit into a majority of my favorite clothes right now. I'm also not anywhere near well-off enough to just completely overhaul and refill my wardrobe with my current size. Without cute outfits that fit, there aren't any cute outfit posts. I haven't even been taking outfit photos for instagram anymore either. I'll get back into that whenever I'm able and hopefully have enough of my other content to keep things going around here. Regardless, apologies for my unannounced absence, and apologies still for what will continue to be a rocky path to getting this blog to where I would like it to be!

For now I plan to continue my week long celebration that began on Sunday. I'm 30 damnit! It takes at least a week to process and move on to the next level of age. Will this be the year I finally learn the much coveted skill of playing through a D&D game? How much more grinding at my day job will I have to do to earn enough coin to support my true passions? Will I finally complete quest "move out of parent's house"? Until then, that quest for the ultimate margarita continues.

Until next time,

All work and no play and all that

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Apparently taking on ten extra shifts in one month, dealing with some pretty bad news, and throwing yourself into personal work makes for a bad blog month, who knew? I'm exhausted. I barely had the energy to draw this little thing, but I feel bad neglecting my little baby blog! May is going to really clear up for me, and I'm trying to plan some posts, but things are still a little chaotic around my home so I'm not sure I can even stick to a schedule, as much as I'd love to have more time to update.

The one good thing that's come out of all of this is that I've gotten back into the swing of comics. I missed making them so much. I'm terribly rusty, but I'm already improving as I work through them. There's nothing to show for it currently, but the script was completed, and I'm about a 3rd completed with the page sketches. I'm really excited about it, and will definitely share news about it when I'm ready to put it up for viewing! The heat in LA right now is heavy and slowing me down a bit (extreme heat gives me the worst headaches!) but I'm still pumped about creating again, and have been slowly working through world-building for my epic fantasy comic (which is something I'm working on for my 30 before 30 goal list!) I'm actually hoping to knock off a few things from that list in the coming months, so hopefully I'll have some posts regarding that!

Lastly, I'm still working through my photos from my Portland trip, but actually thinking of posting them in a few more condensed post, or else it might take me months to actually get through all the posts for it, which makes no sense as I'll likely take other trips by that point.

Alright, I'm off to write some more world-building notes, while half-watching Charmed (I've been watching through nostalgia goggles and it's still a little painful!) and sweat all over everything I own.

P.S. The dress I'm wearing in this drawing is currently my favorite thing. So comfy and cute! They're still selling them at Target right now!

Until next time!

One of those days...weeks...months...

Friday, March 28, 2014

You know you're in a slump when it's the middle of the week and you can't remember what day it is. Slumps come and go for me, and I'm not particularly worried about this one, but I can easily identify my slumps. I don't want to go out much, I wear clothes that reflect ease and comfort rather than style choices. My clothes are often more drab colors, so they don't stand out when I eventually do leave my home for work or groceries. I've been sticking to leggings and loose dresses and my new favorite sweater from Forever21 (who, by the way, had excellent sweater choices this winter!).

I haven't felt like being out since I've returned home from Portland. Post-vacation depression? Is that a thing? Getting back to routine, to work, and to all the things you were trying to get away from on your vacation; it can be a little overwhelming. I've been trying to be productive by working on comics, or reading, or cooking, but sometimes even the smallest thing is too much work. While I have no small amount of troubles, sometimes they pile up and seem insurmountable. Needless to say, as much as I've wanted to get out and do some fashion posts, they've been on the back burner on my list of self-care and priorities. (Whoo boy, good thing I didn't decide to make this blog focus on fashion!)

This post isn't to worry anyone, I'm not fine, but I will be. These things tend to happen to even the most positive of people (a list for which I probably do not qualify, but that's neither here nor there!) and we all seem to push through. There'll be a day where the items in my closet speak out to me again and I'll be able to put together an outfit and feel amazing in it! But for now I'm just going to push through this little slump of mine until I'm in a better place emotionally and wear my drab, comfy clothes.

I'm actually still editing photos for the next post from my trip as well. There are just SO many lovely images from our trip to Multnomah Falls that I'm having a hell of a time trying to weed out any of them! The nature out in Oregon was just so beautiful, it's hard to look at any picture and think it's not worth showing to everyone! Perhaps I'm just not used to seeing green as others, though. I mean how many pictures of trees can one really take? Let me answer that for you right now: a lot! My apologies in advance for those endless tree photos. I just really love trees! Ask my brother. I'm sure he doesn't miss the countless amount of times I asked to stop what we were doing so I could take yet another picture of a tree. Anyway, I should have that post coming together soon!

Until next time, have a great weekend!

Portland, BTW

Saturday, March 1, 2014

Hey all! So I basically left for my Portland trip without so much as a peep on here! I had a farewell post planned, with this completed image in mind, but that just didn't happen. I ran out of time so fast, I never knew what hit me! This image is an incomplete preview of what will likely be the cover to my collection of autobio travelogue comics about our trip to Portland!

My brother and I are completely enamoured with the area so far! It's been cold and rainy, but it didn't really seem to matter as we walked around downtown and stumbled into different districts! We also traveled to Seattle for a short trip, and while it was a beautiful city, it was a little too much like home for us to really appreciate. However, I'll admit we hardly had enough time to walk around and take it in. Perhaps another time!

I'll definitely have some photo posts from the trip later on, and maybe even a photo an hour post, and an outfit post if I can get my brother to have some patience and photograph me! Hope life is treating you all well! You'll hear from me soon!

30 before 30

Saturday, January 25, 2014

So, if you checked out my about page (or know me otherwise), you'll know I turn 30 in September of this year. 30 is a big number for a lot of people, myself included. I think it's considered the first step into "old" territory. I've heard 30 is the new 25, but maybe it always was and I was just too young to really realize that. Who knows?! I just hope it's true!

I'm a late bloomer, though. I didn't really start coming into who I was until I was about 23 years old and started learning a lot more about myself. And I haven't really felt self-actualized until within the past couple of years. So there is still a lot on my plate as far as wanting to accomplish before the scary age of 30! Rather than make new years resolutions this year, I made a list of 30 things, large and small, to accomplish over the next nine months that I hope will help make me feel more at peace with the big THREE-OH. I've put it under a read more, because a 30 point list is rather long, especially with descriptions. Whenever I achieve any of these points I will make a post about it!

Outfit: Sick Day

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

So here I am, with a set date to launch this blog, and BAM, I'm hit with a cold. What's new though? I get sick often because my immune system is a hot mess. I had wanted to have some actual photos by now for posting, but being sick really takes the fun out of posing in cute outfits, so I decided to draw what I wore instead.

The only thing that might be noteworthy about the outfit would be the leggings that I got from H&M last season. But it was still fun to draw and do something somewhat productive while I'm resting in bed. Luckily my cold didn't upset my plans too much, but hopefully I'll be able to get out of the house tomorrow for the first time in a few days!

Introductions

Hello GIF
Hello! My name is Jessie, and welcome to my blog! I've been wanting to make a blog for almost five years now. I've tried a few times in the past, but they didn't work out for various reasons. But now I'm feeling more determined to successfully post and document my life.

In the past couple of years I've really grown and stepped out of my shell and realized I haven't really documented much of anything at all. I'm more comfortable and self-actualized than I have been in years, and I have no real record of how I got to this point in my life! I thought it was a real shame.

I could have started this blog earlier. I put it off again and again. "No one will care." "No one will want to read that." "I don't know what I'm doing." "I'm not good enough at this/that." I was finally led to the realization that I care, and I will want to come back and read this at some point, and see the progress I've made. Maybe I will never know what I'm doing, but I have to do it anyway, otherwise I'll never figure anything out! And I'll never be good enough at anything, but I view that as a positive thing now. Not being good enough means I'm still able to improve upon myself and my work and push my boundaries! The best part of being a creator is seeing your improvement. But to reach a point where I feel "good enough" is to reach a point where there is no more progression.

So I've created this space to showcase bits of my art portfolio, and to showcase a bit of myself as well. I wanted a space to document all the leaps and bounds I take every day, even if they're itty bitty little ones. You'll find illustrations, fashion, comics (usually autobiographical in nature) and general lifestyle posts. I have some big plans for this blog, so stay tuned!
